Anthurium Regale
One of the most majestic aroids in cultivation, Anthurium regale earns its royal name through sheer scale and presence. Native to the humid pre-montane forests of central Peru — along the slopes of the Huallaga River valley at elevations of 600-1,200 meters — it produces some of the largest leaves of any anthurium kept indoors: broadly heart-shaped, deeply velvety dark green blades mapped with a dense, almost painted network of white to pale green venation that creates one of the most visually arresting leaf surfaces in the plant kingdom. Mature leaves indoors routinely reach 3-4 feet in length; in ideal conditions and over many years they can approach 6 feet, a scale that makes a well-grown specimen the dominant, conversation-stopping presence in any room or collection. Unlike many anthuriums, it is primarily terrestrial rather than epiphytic — growing from a creeping rhizome on the forest floor — and also unusual in that it typically carries only one leaf at a time at the juvenile stage, each one unfurling slowly and deliberately in golden-green tones before hardening to its deep mature color. A genuinely demanding species that rewards patience and precise conditions with an incomparable display.
As a terrestrial species, A. regale needs a wide, deep pot that accommodates its spreading root system and supports the weight of its enormous leaves. Provide bright indirect light — good light supports the development of the largest, most boldly veined leaves, and new growth emerges in golden-green tones that deepen with adequate illumination. Keep the medium evenly moist but never waterlogged, watering when the top inch begins to dry; bacterial infection of the velvety leaf surface is the primary threat when conditions are too wet or airflow is insufficient. A rich, open, well-draining mix of coarse orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and sphagnum supports both moisture retention and aeration. High humidity of 70-80% is critical — insufficient humidity directly limits leaf size and triggers browning of the long, exposed leaf surface. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F away from cold drafts and fluctuations. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
